As someone who attended many Games Studies PhD defenses and has heard the Bartle taxonomy more times than I care to count, I recently saw this article by the Angry DM which covers "8 kinds of fun" that I find more nuanced than Bartle's "4 motivations for gamers".

To summarize, Bartle scales gamer psychology on four dimensions: Achievers, Explorers, Socializers, and Killers.

The Angry DM extends this to eight: Sensory Pleasure, Fantasy (Escapism), Narrative, Challenge, Fellowship, Discovery, Expression, Submission (aka mindless gameplay loops)

I think Angry's addition of Expression and Submission are particularly important for games like, say, Animal Crossing.
