Thinking about when the idea of character "builds" became a thing in D&D and its descendants. In the beginning, the only choices you'd make at character creation and leveling up were spells.

I find the introduction of feats and subclasses interesting because I was absent for that part of the culture, stopping at AD&D 2e and coming back decades later at the tail end of Pathfinder 1e.
